Greek Street Art (4/2025)

Street Art in Greece

Street art is a contemporary form of artistic expression that was born on the streets and in urban environments, transforming the grey landscape of cities into vibrant canvases full of colors, messages, and social commentary. Through their work, street artists express their ideas, interact with their environment, and give voice to social, political, cultural, and other issues.
UrbanAct is a group with an active presence since 1998, leading the promotion of public mural painting and street art in Greece. With more than 500 murals across the country, UrbanAct now implements organized and targeted programs such as “Painting School Buildings,” “Color in Hospitals,” “Color in the Islands”, as well as mural productions, festivals, exhibitions, and publications. The organization collaborates with artists from Greece and abroad, public and private bodies, companies, associations, citizen movements, and more. Through its programs, UrbanAct provides opportunities for artists and citizens to express themselves and engage with one another, creating landmarks.
The following works are characteristic examples of the Greek street art scene, created by established artists who have collaborated with UrbanAct.

KEZ – “Odyssey”, 2018
Municipal Guesthouses of Volos, “FaceArt” – UrbanAct’s annual Mural Art Festival
"The mural 'Odyssey' is based on the mythical journey of Odysseus. The 'Odyssey' is not just a tale of adventures, but a mirror of the human condition and the struggles we must overcome to find our path and return home – whatever 'home' may mean to each of us."
Under the auspices of the Municipality of Volos

SAME84 – “From Black to Color”, 2023
Ippokrateio General Hospital of Thessaloniki, UrbanAct’s production for “40 Years of KETHEA–ITHAKI”
“In this piece for Ithaki, I created a person in dynamic forward motion, ready to transition from a gray, monotonous environment into a colorful and vibrant one. The intense color contrast reflects the need for change and progress.”
Organized and supported by KETHEA ITHAKI and hosted by Hippocrates General Hospital of Thessaloniki

PUPET – “The Vine Growers”, 2018
Lipsi Island, UrbanAct’s pilot program “Color in the Islands”
“This work is inspired by the island’s tradition, specifically winemaking. On Lipsi, viticulture is an important part of life with a long-standing tradition, and wine is the main agricultural product. In my work, I depict one of the countless moments when winemakers are harvesting grapes from the vineyard.”
Under the auspices of the Municipality of Lipsi and with the support and exclusive donation of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation

SIVE – “The Cretan”, 2014
14th Primary School of Volos, UrbanAct’s “Painting School Buildings” program
“The mural ‘The Cretan’ is dedicated to traditional Cretan music and the lyra, a symbol of Crete’s musical heritage. It depicts a Cretan lyra player performing with passion and skill, a musician deeply connected to his roots and the cultural legacy of his homeland. The image highlights the intensity and beauty of Cretan music, while also emphasizing the value of tradition and creativity. Through this mural, I aim to convey the power of music to connect people with their history and the endless inspiration drawn from the nature and culture of Crete.”
Under the auspices of the Municipality of Volos and hosted by the 14th Primary School of Volos

Transforming the Urban Landscape
These murals, all created in public spaces and visible to citizens, are part of UrbanAct’s collective programs for the production and curation of street art. Street art intervenes in the urban landscape and transforms it, projecting cultural, social, environmental, and other messages. Artists KEZ, PUPET, SAME84, and SIVE have left their mark on both the Greek and international street art scenes, contributing to the creation of iconic landmarks for locals and visitors alike.
