EUROPA 2022 - Stories and Myths (4/2022)
The scene of the murder of Orpheus by the Maenads was chosen by the Hellenic Post to be presented in this year's EUROPA 2022 Issue under the theme "Stories and Myths". Orpheus was one of the most important figures in Greek mythology. He was a Thracian bard, legendary musician, poet and prophet. He travelled with Jason and the Argonauts in search of the Golden Fleece, and even descended into the Underworld of Hades to recover his lost wife Eurydice. Towards the end of his life, he disdained the worship of all gods except the sun, whom he called Apollo. One early morning he went to the oracle of Dionysus at Mount Pangaion to salute his god, but was ripped to shreds by Thracian Maenads for not honouring his previous patron (Dionysus).
