The design on the front of the medal is based on Giannis Kefallinos’s "Poseidon", from the 1954 "Ancient Greek Art" commemorative issue.

Giannis Kefallinos, who was instrumental in shaping modern Greek engraving, taught at the School of Fine Arts and created many images for Hellenic Post stamps between 1950 and 1954.
